Bardaisan of Edessa (d. 222) was an influential theologian of the early Syriac church, but due to later condemnations of his though his writings have not survived. Yet a careful reading of the extant fragments of his works (preserved in the writings of his opponents), and a close study of the patristic summaries and refutations of his teachings, enable us to access large portions of his thought. This paper will attempt to reconstruct Bardaisan’s christology from the relevant sources. In particular, it will address the question whether or not Bardaisan embraced a docetic christology.
