In various protomonastic and early monastic texts from the 3-4 century AD such as Physiologos, letters of Antony, Pachomian literature, ascetic writings of Athanasius, Demonstrationes of Aphrahat and others we find the term covenant or its equivalents meaning a personal covenant of an individual or of a group with God. In the paper I will try to discuss this material with regard to its significance for understanding of the emergence of the Christian monasticism.
